Jasmine was raised in the United States, while Otto spent his first eleven years in Hong Kong. After coming to the States, Otto's parents enrolled him at Chinese Christian Schools, the same school that Jasmine studied from K-12. Despite spending seven years together at the same school and at the same church, Jasmine and Otto never really acquainted with each other because they were a grade apart.
Jasmine and Otto did not get to know each other until Otto returned to the college fellowship at their church during his last year in school. This all started when Jasmine gave bad directions to Otto during a fellowship outing in San Francisco (Jasmine claimed that she was merely relaying the directions from someone else). During that same night, Jasmine took advantage of Otto's unsuspecting kindness by asking him to give her a hand with some leftover food from the barbecue earlier. As soon as the food exited her possession Jasmine gave out a sinister grin, by which Otto immediately realized that she had no intention in taking back the food. Although this sequence of events did not spawn their romantic relationship, it is certainly something that they look back and enjoy a laugh out of it.
After approximately seven months of radio silence, God decided that it was time to unfold His beautiful plan of bringing Jasmine and Otto together. One night during their college fellowship time, Jasmine, who was in charge of overseeing campus team small groups, went up to Otto and asked if he would be interested in taking the home team training class at church. When Jasmine and Otto went back into the room, Jasmine made a loud declaration that they are getting married! Of course, at that time they knew nothing about each other other than their names, and Jasmine made that comment only out of her playful nature. So exactly how Jasmine and Otto started their relationship? This can be attributed to nothing but Otto's severe allergy attack. On another Friday night, Otto suffered a serious allergy attack. His nose was like a leaky faucet that would not stop dripping. It was a night in which Jasmine opened up her house for everyone to gather after the fellowship meeting. On the following night, Jasmine checked up on Otto to make sure he was feeling better. Under normal circumstances, the conversation would have ended after Otto told Jasmine that he was feeling fine because Otto's introverted nature can rarely sustain a conversation for an extended period of time. Due to divine intervention though, the conversation continued. They discussed topics such as their goals and their plans for the summer.
Jasmine started the talk with the goal of convincing Otto to join the mission trip that she was co-leading. During that time she completely impressed Otto with her missionary aspirations. Particularly Jasmine's desire and plan to go to China on a mission trip displayed the fire that she has for reaching lost souls and her tremendous faith because she has never been out of the states before. After the lengthy chat that night, Jasmine and Otto continued talking and deepening their relationship. They weather through all the ups and downs in their relationship and never gave up on each other. They were tested over and over again, and they persevered through every obstacle that came their way. Two and a half years after their relationship began, they decided that they are ready for marriage, and the rest is history.
